Life on the Atlantic

I’m finding that taking very still and clear photos while on a ship that is rocking and vibrating is a bit of a challenge. On the bright side, I’m really enjoying our time here and very happy with the painting I’ve been able to do. My uncle Jim gave me Edgar Payne’s Composition of Outdoor Painting and I’ve found it to be very interesting and helpful. From the paintings I’m doing in our cabin to the sketches I’m doing on deck it’s giving me some new ideas and perspectives on the fleeting cloud formations and the incredible body of water that surrounds us. We have another week to go but I can’t wait to get out and do some drawings in Barcelona.

Here is a painting that I finished today. Again it is a small watercolor, 4″ x 6″, and reflects on some of Payne’s ideas about the size and placement of objects.

There is plenty more to come in the near future and I’ll be updating regularly if the Internet permits.
